If migraines are a regular part of your life, you know how much they take from you. The pain, the lost days, the feeling of waiting for it to pass. At our chiropractic office in El Cajon, CA, we work with migraine patients ready to stop managing symptoms and start doing something about them.

Migraines are more than just bad headaches. They are a neurological condition that can cause intense, throbbing head pain, usually on one side, often accompanied by nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, and visual disturbances. For many people, a migraine means hours or even days of being completely out of commission.
What makes them so frustrating is that they tend to be unpredictable. A migraine can be triggered by stress, certain foods, hormonal changes, sleep disruption, posture, or tension building up in the neck and upper spine. That last one is where chiropractic care comes in.
Research has consistently shown a strong connection between spinal health, particularly in the cervical spine, and migraine frequency and severity. Tension and misalignment in the neck can irritate nerves and restrict blood flow in ways that contribute directly to migraine episodes. Addressing that underlying tension is one of the most effective things you can do to reduce how often migraines happen and how bad they get.
Migraines do not always look the same from person to person. Some people get the classic one-sided pounding pain. Others experience more subtle symptoms that they might not immediately connect to migraines. Here are some signs worth paying attention to:
• Throbbing or pulsing pain, usually on one side of the head
• Sensitivity to light, sound, or strong smells during an episode
• Nausea or vomiting alongside head pain
• Visual disturbances like flashing lights, blind spots, or blurry vision before or during an episode
• Neck stiffness or tension in the hours leading up to a headache
• Fatigue, brain fog, or mood changes before or after the pain hits
• Headaches that regularly last anywhere from a few hours to a few days
If any of this sounds familiar, it is worth getting evaluated. A lot of chronic migraine sufferers have never been assessed for spinal tension or cervical misalignment, which means a very treatable contributing factor gets overlooked entirely.

Migraines are rarely caused by just one thing. Most people have a combination of triggers and underlying vulnerabilities that make them more prone to episodes. Some of the most common factors include:
• Cervical spine tension or misalignment. The upper neck has a direct relationship with the nerves and blood vessels that supply the head. When something is off there, it can set off a migraine.
• Muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. Chronic tightness in this area puts constant pressure on nerves and can become a reliable migraine trigger.
• Stress. One of the most commonly reported triggers. Stress causes muscle tension and disrupts the nervous system in ways that make migraines more likely.
• Poor posture. Spending long hours looking down at a phone or hunched over a desk puts strain on the cervical spine that builds up over time.
• Sleep disruption. Too little sleep, too much sleep, or irregular sleep patterns are all common migraine triggers.
• Hormonal changes. Many people, particularly women, notice migraines fluctuate with hormonal shifts throughout the month.
• Dietary triggers. Caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, and skipping meals can all contribute to migraine episodes in susceptible individuals.
Most migraine treatments focus on managing the pain after it starts. Chiropractic care takes a different approach. Instead of just treating the episode, we work on reducing the underlying tension and nerve irritation that makes migraines more likely to happen in the first place.
Depending on what we find during your evaluation, your treatment plan may include:
• Cervical spinal adjustments. Precise adjustments to the upper neck that relieve nerve irritation, improve joint mobility, and reduce the muscular tension that contributes to migraines.
• Soft tissue therapy. Hands-on work to release tight muscles in the neck, shoulders, and upper back that are feeding into your migraine pattern.
• Posture correction. Identifying and addressing the postural habits that are putting chronic strain on your cervical spine.
• Therapeutic exercises. Targeted stretches and strengthening movements to support the neck and reduce tension between visits.
• Lifestyle and trigger guidance. Practical advice on sleep, hydration, posture, and other daily habits that can meaningfully reduce how often migraines occur.
We are not going to promise you will never get another migraine. But many of our patients see a real reduction in how often they happen and how severe they are, often within just a few weeks of consistent care.
